At Bignold Primary School we are committed to providing all children with learning opportunities to engage in history.
History is about real people who lived, and real events which happened in the past. History is concerned with sequence, time and chronology and is the study of evidence about the past; it gives us a sense of identity, set within our social, political, cultural and economic relationships. History fires children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world and plays an essential part in preparing us for living and working in the contemporary world. Pupils consider how the past influences the present, what past societies were like, how these societies organized their politics, and what beliefs and cultures influenced people’s actions.
Our curriculum planning, linked to the CUSP scheme of work, is designed to ensure that the knowledge, skills and vocabulary are mapped out and children’s understanding and learning is built on each year.
We are extremely lucky to have all the history of the great city of Norwich literally on our doorstep. A solid commitment to studying history within the local area and the importance of Norwich and Norfolk to the development of the nation will be one of the focuses of work completed by children as they go through the years at Bignold School. History enables learning in other areas of the curriculum and children develop this by consolidating their understanding of historical skills through work in areas such as English, Science, Geography and Art.
Our children to leave KS2 ready to take on the challenge of a subject-based timetable at secondary level and with a passion for learning and knowledge.
At Bignold, we want the children to think like a historian!
It is important that the children develop progressive skills of a historian throughout their time at Bignold and do not just learn a series of facts about the past. In History, our approach ensures children find evidence, weigh it up and reach their own conclusion to answer key historical questions.
