At Bignold we believe that our curriculum should raise aspirations, develop independence and offer all children real-life experiences.
Science at Bignold is very much a practical part of the curriculum that enables our children to be ‘Scientists’ and make sense of the world around them through exploration, investigation and discovery. Through practical and meaningful experiences, we seek to develop the key scientific knowledge and the skills of observation, questioning, exploration and investigation to prepare our children for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world. They will experience both collaborative and individual science challenges and learn about the recording of science and scientific language. They will gain an understanding of the role that science plays in many aspects of their lives, environmentally, societally and within sport and diet. At Bignold we link scientific knowledge with other curriculum areas, such as PE, math, geography and DT, which allows retrieval of information over an academic year. We encourage links in our community and create opportunities for learning through visits from experts who enhance the learning experience, inspire children and open up the world of work and future careers.
Scientific enquiry skills are embedded in each topic the children study and these topics are revisited and developed throughout their time at school. Our curriculum Long Term Plan is designed to ensure that the knowledge, skills and vocabulary are mapped out, and children’s understanding and learning is built on each year. The aim is for our children to leave KS2 ready to take on the challenge of a subject-based timetable at secondary level and with a passion for learning and knowledge.
We use the CUSP scheme and ASE (Association for Science Education) to support our planning and resourcing for all children, including those with SEND and from disadvantaged backgrounds. We have high ambitions for all our children; we scaffold learning when needed so that all children achieve well in science.
