Bignold Primary School

Music

The Principles of our Curriculum:

Research-led: helping children to know more and remember more

Ambitious: every child achieving well

Inclusive: a focus on community and participation

Our Music curriculum allows children to develop their musical knowledge, skills and understanding through a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum. Children have opportunities to listen to, compose, perform and evaluate music, enabling them to express themselves creatively and confidently.

Through research-led pedagogy, children at Bignold will learn about the interrelated dimensions of music, including pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture and structure. They will explore a wide range of musical genres, traditions and cultures, developing an appreciation of music from around the world and throughout history.

Our Music curriculum aims to inspire a lifelong love of music whilst ensuring that all children develop the knowledge and skills needed to become confident musicians. We aim to provide meaningful musical experiences that enable every child to succeed and achieve their full potential.

Furthermore, our Music curriculum develops children's creativity, resilience, self-confidence, communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with others. Through performance opportunities, children learn the value of commitment, perseverance and teamwork.

We aim to provide an inclusive and ambitious music education that is accessible to all pupils. Through high-quality teaching, specialist provision and enrichment opportunities, we strive to ensure that every child can participate, progress and experience success in music.

Through our Music curriculum, children are able to produce compositions and performances using their voices and a range of instruments, learn to listen critically and evaluate music thoughtfully, and find a love of music that extends beyond the classroom. Children develop the confidence to share their musical ideas and celebrate their achievements as performers and composers.

Children at Bignold achieve well in Music. They build their knowledge and skills progressively throughout their time at school, demonstrating increasing confidence in performing, composing and appraising music. They apply their learning across a range of musical contexts and are encouraged to take pride in their achievements.

Children experience a rich variety of musical opportunities, including whole-class instrumental tuition, singing, composition, performance opportunities, concerts, music enrichment clubs and collaborations with specialist music providers. These experiences broaden children's cultural understanding and enrich their school experience.

We use the Kapow Scheme of Learning to support our planning and resourcing for all children, including those with SEND and from disadvantaged backgrounds. We work closely with the Norfolk Music Service to provide high-quality instrument lessons for all children. We have high ambitions for all our children and carefully scaffold learning where needed to ensure that every pupil achieves well in Music and can fully participate in the musical life of the school.
